Cornerstones Curriculum

The Cornerstones Curriculum has a variety of interesting topics for each year group. The teachers choose the topics for the year based on the children’s interests. The topics are then mapped out to ensure that all National Curriculum areas are incorporated. Below is a list of topics being covered in 2017/2018 for each year group and a curriculum map with overviews for each topic.

Assessment

In addition to changes in the curriculum, there has also been a change in the system of assessment. The current system of levels has been removed. From September 2014 Schools have developed new systems of assessments to run alongside the new expectations in each subject.

Assessment is a vital part of teaching and learning and as such helps teachers in planning work, identifying problems and helping children to make progress.

Assessment is an on-going process throughout the child’s school career. Teachers use both formal and informal opportunities to assess children’s progress and achievements. Assessment can be on a day-to-day basis, which informs teaching and learning. This may be carried out through questioning, observing and marking, which is on-going. It is used on a daily basis to inform the planning for the week. Also, we have the more formal SATs for Year 2 and Year 6 at the end of the year.

At Firs Estate Primary School we have chosen to use the Cornerstones Assessment system. This links closely to our curriculum scheme. Cornerstones assessment breaks down the curriculum into age related expectations. For instance a child working in Year 1, term 1 is said to be working at 5 Years and 10 months.  Children are assessed against these age related expectations every half term. Parents can discuss their child’s progress and attainment at Parents Evenings in the Autumn and Spring terms.
